Obesity
| < Back to Prolotherapy Article Index |
Many patients don’t want to discuss their weight with their physician. Even more troubling is that in one survey, more than 60% of overweight patients and 40% of obese patients didn’t feel that their weight problem posed a serious risk to their health. Many overweight patients feel that it is “their” problem and that they would rather try dieting on their own. Yo-yo dieting according to recommendations made by a friend, or trying fad diets published in magazines, may pose a more serious risk than not addressing the problem to begin with.
If you think like many people who have been trying to follow the standard food pyramid, you may think Low Fat + High Carbohydrates =Thin. Let’s just say that since the food pyramid made its debut in 1991, the American rate for obesity has increased 61%. We know that this diet is not for everyone. Unfortunately, this diet may have dangerous effects on those who try and follow it too closely.
What can you do about it?
Every individual has the power to combat obesity. When you are ready to take the steps, there will be a natural medicine doctor there to guide you, whether to prevent or treat obesity.
Here are some frequently used methods to start combating obesity:
Food:
Cut out sugary foods
Cut out sugary drinks: soda, juice, alcohol
Decrease Carbohydrate intake
Increase vegetable intake
Increase consumption of soy products
Cut out fried foods
Exercise:
Start slow with incorporating more walking into your day.
Try walking up the stairs, rather than taking the elevator.
Try walking or biking to work rather than driving, if possible.
Set realistic exercise goals for yourself with your physician.
Get the whole family involved in more regular physical activities.
Continue to build a strong relationship with your physician throughout your program.
8 Ways We Tailor
A Healthy Diet For You
Ross A. Hauser, M.D.
Caring Medical is one of the most experienced clinics in diet typing. Here is a synopsis of the main eight ways that we help tailor a diet for you to meet your health care goals:
Blood pH
You do not know whether your blood tends to run acid or alkaline. My blood tends to be acidic and my wife’s is alkaline. In many ways, she is the opposite of me. She is smart, I need help. She has manners, I often do not. She is nice to people, well, I enjoy being by myself. The funny one, though, is me. (That’s debatable). Since I tend to be acidic, I need to eat more protein than she does. She does well with a more balance diet.
Food Allergies
Everyone should have a comprehensive food allergy panel drawn via the blood. It is amazing what allergies you find in people. We commonly see patients who come in with came in with terrible fatigue. One of the tests we performed recently on a patient last week was the allergy panel. Sure enough, her test revealed that she was allergic to simple foods like wheat, pineapple, and ginger. The results were amazing. After eliminating these foods, she felt great.
Oxidative Rate
Do you metabolize food quickly or slowly? Get a glucose tolerance test (like pregnant women get). If you metabolize food quickly, then you need more protein and fat in your diet. What causes anxiety? The most common finding that shows up consistently with our patients who struggle with generalized anxiety disorder is that they metabolize food too quickly. If that is you, increase the protein and fat in your diet.
Your Health Complaint
Because of our experience, we can often tell from the history what kind of diet is needed. Some examples are the autistic kids. They typically metabolically type as carnivores (meat eaters), whereas those with rheumatoid arthritis usually type out as more vegetarian types, like giraffes. The giraffes need to eat a very low fat diet. Interestingly enough, those from warm climates tend to need more carbohydrates, than those of us from the colder climates.
Insulin
It is very important for you to find out your fasting insulin levels, especially if you are struggling with being overweight. Hyperinsulinemia is one of the easiest conditions to reverse to help you lose weight. A patient came to us about fifty pounds overweight. Her insulin levels were 53 fasting. (We like them to be under 15). She was diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia. We put her on The Hauser Diet and had her take the following supplements:
CLA
Beulah GTF
Flax Seed Oil
SuperOmega
Juice Fasting
Yes, there are still some of us that use the juice fast. Are you wondering if your health problems are related to food? Why not try a one week juice fast? Please do not do this without consulting a natural medicine specialist first. If, for instance, a person’s lupus symptoms subside by 50% during the week of the fast, then it is a good assumption that 50% of the person’s symptoms are due to food. In that case, this person should get some of the above tests to figure out which foods are contributing to the problem.
The Food Diary
In extremely difficult cases, we ask our patients to keep a food diary along with performing the above tests. Let’s look at what foods were eaten when the person had a great day and when they had a horrible day. One patient's food diary revealed that he experienced worsened peripheral neuropathy pain when he consumed dairy products. We eliminated dairy and instructed him to change to soy milk and his pain reduced 25%. Sometimes the simple things work!
Routine Blood Work
A routine chemistry (metabolic profile) panel can really tell a lot about a person. For instance, the person with very low Ferritin levels, needs more iron. Ferritin is the storage form of iron. Therefore, this person would need to consume more meat/protein. If your cholesterol or triglyceride levels are too low, this can also be a problem. We have found, for example, that people with seizure disorders may increase the frequency of their seizures if there triglyceride levels are too low. In this case, taking SuperOmega and Flax Seed oil supplements, as well as increasing natural fats and protein in the diet would help to avoid this problem
Remember, your health is a precious gift. A gift that should be treasured. Do all you can to keep it that way!
