VAST ARRAY OF SPORTS INJURIES

Handball players account for the single most athletes from a sport I see in my practice. I have always been intrigued by the sport because my grandfather would talk about it, because it was the only sport he and his 'poor' friends could afford to play. All you needed was the back of a school and a ball. Over the years by helping this group of handball player and that group, Caring Medical is well known by most of the handball groups in the Chicagoland area as a place to get care so you can keep playing handball.

Why are handball players so prone to injury? The answer lies in the facts that:

Handball players are zealous.

They love playing handball and will play it often like two to three times per week for years.
Handball players take the brunt of the force of the game on their own bodies. They do not have a racket or a stick that takes a lot of the force, every time they touch the ball the force of the thrown or the catch is from their own body.

Handball players often have poor technique. This poor technique is then continued year after year eventually wearing out a joint.

The sport is extremely hard on the elbows and shoulders.

Because of the stopping and starting the knees and hips can easily become over used in handball.

Handball takes years to master.

Once it is mastered people want to keep playing it. So you have much older guys playing handball against the new 'young' guys. Well these young guys have young bodies and the 'old' guys do not. This is a good set up for an injury to the 'old' guys.

The sport demands that the ball in handball be thrown at tremendous speeds. This increases the forces on the upper extremity.

Most injuries in handball involve ligaments and tendons which are not surgical candidates. Thus, the injuries remain since there isn't any long-term curative treatment for them except, in my opinion, Prolotherapy.

Handball is a sport played on a hard surface. This hard surface increases the stressors especially on the knees.

Handball typically causes injuries to the rotator cuff around the shoulder and muscle attachments around the elbow or the ligamentous support of those two joints, all of these injuries respond very well to Prolotherapy. If a handball players has the unfortunate situation in that degeneration of the knees or hips occur (arthritis) then Prolotherapy, in my opinion, offers a much better long term solution for these conditions then anti-inflammatories or joint replacement. Prolotherapy by stimulating the repair of the injured structures causes them to get strong so the handball player can get back to the sport they love. It is hard to find something you have a passion for, so if you love your sport and can't play it because of pain, weakness, or injury consider getting Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy is becoming the treatment of choice for handball players in the Chicagoland area.
