Prolotherapy, the best option for young athletes’ sports injuries
Prolotherapy for Young Athletes

Participating in sports provides many opportunities for a young athlete to learn sportsmanship, team involvement and discipline. It also provides opportunity to develop focus and passion for a particular sport. But along with athletics can come injury that can take a young athlete out of the sport for quite some time. Young athletes account for 4 million injuries per year. The most common treatment includes RICE, physical therapy and sometimes surgery, but we believe that the most effective treatment is Prolotherapy. Yes, even children can receive Prolotherapy. They are actually some of the best candidates. Unfortunately the RICE protocol will only futher the degenerative process and actually make matters worse in most cases. This can often lead to surgery – even in young athletes, dashing their hopes for a further opportunity to play their sport in high school, college, or professionally – or even just in the local park district league. Prolotherapy stimulates healing where NSAIDs and cortisone shots make the condition worse.
Plain and simple, Prolotherapy works great in children. Children heal great. Most are still in the growth phase of life and their bodies are rapidly regenerating new tissue. Therefore their bodies respond to Prolotherapy well and enter into ahealing mode much quicker and easier than some adults.
Some of the more common child/adolescent conditions that are successfully treated with Prolotherapy include
- Tendon/Ligament Sports Injuries
- Recurrent Joint Dislocations
- Osgood-Schlatters Disease
- Little league Elbow
Protocol for young athletes: Every patient is an individual but in general for children/adolescents desiring to return to a sport we do Prolotherapy every one to three weeks. If they had a recent joint dislocation we would do the treatment once a week and limit activity while they were doing Prolotherapy. Most children/adolescents need three sessions of Prolotherapy. Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair painful areas. It doesn’t matter whether a person is four years old or ninety-nine. So make sure the kids eat healthy and if they have an injury that isn’t healing you know where to turn….Prolotherapy.
