Deterioration of Articular Cartilage With Just One Steriod Injection

Regarding the effect of corticosteroid injections, some researchers started looking at the effects of just one corticosteroid injection into a joint of an animal. One study, done at University Central Hospital in Helsinki, Finland, showed significant deleterious effects on cartilage via electron microscopy after only one steroid injection into the knee. The authors also found that the higher the dose of steroids injected into the knee, the worse the deterioration.47 Even one injection into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) showed tremendous destruction of the articular cartilage and underlying bone.48 Another study showed that even 16 weeks after a single steroid joint injection, the cartilage remained biochemically and metabolically impaired.49
